There are two distinct needs often confused:
1. Monitoring ambient humidity — knowing the current RH in your room, factory floor, storage area, or product environment. Consumer hygrometers are fully adequate for this.
2. Testing product performance under controlled humidity — exposing a product to a defined humidity condition and measuring how it changes. This requires a humidity chamber that can control and maintain a set point, not just measure ambient conditions.
This guide focuses on option 1 (ambient monitoring without professional equipment). Option 2 always requires a professional humidity chamber.

The DIY Salt Solution Calibration Test
Before trusting a consumer hygrometer, you can verify its accuracy using saturated salt solutions — a method used by calibration laboratories (at a simpler level):
How it works: When a salt is dissolved in water to saturation (no more salt can dissolve), the resulting saturated solution maintains a fixed relative humidity above its surface at a given temperature. This is a known, reproducible reference point.

DIY calibration procedure:
- Dissolve excess table salt (NaCl) in a small amount of water — a paste, not a solution. The saturated salt paste should be slightly wet but not liquid.

- Wait 8–12 hours (temperature must be stable during this time).
- The hygrometer should read 75.3% RH (±1%) at 25°C. If it reads, say, 80%, your hygrometer reads high by approximately 4.7% RH.
- Apply the correction offset to future readings.
Limitations: This procedure is not NABL-traceable. It tells you your hygrometer's approximate error at one point (75% RH), not its full accuracy across the range. For professional use, send the hygrometer to a NABL-accredited calibration lab (cost: ₹500–2,000; turnaround: 3–10 days).

DIY Humidity Indicators: Visual Methods
For rough qualitative assessment without any electronic device:
Cobalt chloride paper (humidity indicator strips): Blue when dry (<30% RH), turns pink-purple above 60% RH. Available from chemistry suppliers and online. Not quantitative — indicates whether humidity is below or above the transition range. Useful for storage box moisture assessment (silica gel needs replacement indicator).
Hair hygrometer: Traditional method — a bundle of human hair (degreased) expands in high humidity and contracts when dry, mechanically moving a dial. Available in antique/weather station instruments. Accuracy ±5–10% RH; requires frequent zeroing. Not recommended for anything requiring better than rough indication.
Condensation/fog test: In a room with suspected high humidity, breathe onto a mirror or cold metal surface. If condensation persists for more than 2–3 seconds, RH is likely above 80% RH at the surface temperature. Very rough indicator.
Salt bridge test (for storage boxes): Place a small open container of dry salt in a sealed storage box with sensitive items. After 24 hours: if salt has dissolved into damp clumps, box humidity was high; if salt remains dry and free-flowing, humidity is below ~70% RH. Table salt (NaCl) is adequate for this rough test.
When DIY Methods Are Enough
Adequate for:
- Deciding whether to run a dehumidifier or humidifier at home
- Troubleshooting mould or condensation problems in a room
- Checking warehouse conditions for stored goods (non-critical, non-regulated)
- Monitoring server rooms, IT closets, or electronics storage areas for rough compliance
- Guiding HVAC settings in an office or factory (comfort-level adjustment)
Not adequate for:
- Product qualification testing before market launch
- ICH pharmaceutical stability studies (requires ±2% RH calibrated instrument per WHO/ICH specifications)
- BIS certification testing
- CE marking environmental tests
- NABL-accredited laboratory services
- Export quality compliance documentation
The Gap Between Home Measurement and Lab Testing
A consumer hygrometer tells you what the ambient RH is now. A humidity chamber does something fundamentally different: it controls humidity to a set point (±2% RH accuracy, ±0.5°C temperature) and maintains that set point for hundreds or thousands of hours while your product is inside — then measures how the product has changed.
This controlled-exposure function cannot be replicated at home, regardless of the quality of your ambient measurement device. A home cannot be converted into a controlled humidity chamber by monitoring and adjusting — too many uncontrolled variables (door openings, occupant activity, seasonal change, HVAC cycling).

No — this is outdoor humidity from the nearest weather station, which may be several kilometres away and at a different microclimate than your indoor space. Indoor humidity in air-conditioned buildings is typically 20–40% lower than outdoor. A dedicated indoor sensor is needed for indoor readings.
Q: I found a small white "humidity indicator" card in a camera bag. How accurate is it? Colour-change humidity indicator cards (typically cobalt chloride-based) indicate approximate RH ranges (e.g., "30%/50%/70%") and are useful for verifying that a sealed packaging is maintaining low humidity for moisture-sensitive items (cameras, electronics, silica gel containers). They're not quantitative and should not be used for product testing — just for storage condition monitoring.
Q: Can I use rice to absorb humidity and then weigh it to measure how much moisture was in the air? This gravimetric approach (desiccant weight gain) is the basis for official MVTR testing (ASTM E96), but doing it accurately at home requires a precision balance (±0.001g) and controlled conditions.
