Water treatment systems have a unique certification challenge: the system adds a substance (silver ions) to drinking water. Unlike a filter (which only removes), an ionization system must demonstrate both:
- The added substance (silver) remains below safe limits in the treated water under all operating conditions
- The system's materials and components do not leach harmful substances into the water (lead from solder, plasticizers from pipes, etc.)
Without certification, you rely entirely on the manufacturer's claims. With certification, an independent body has tested and verified these properties.

BIS Compliance: The Indian Regulatory Framework
In India, silver ionization does not yet have a specific BIS product certification (IS) number for the technology itself — unlike, for example, UV water purifiers (which are covered by BIS IS 15570:2014). The relevant compliance requirement is:
The treated water must comply with BIS IS 10500:2012 for all parameters, including the silver maximum of 0.1 mg/L.
This places the compliance obligation on system performance (output water quality), not the technology itself. Any silver ionization system used for drinking water in India must be operated to keep silver below 100 µg/L in the treated water.
BIS IS 14914 (Domestic Water Purifiers): This standard covers general domestic water purifier performance. Silver ionization systems for household use should ideally meet this standard's general requirements for construction, materials, and performance claims.
